Djanbazan WIP pt. 6

Lots done on the base! I was really feeling the need to put paint on something, so I started in the afternoon and just kind of kept going. I'm really liking it so far. The grass is just in to see how it looks, I'll add some moss, a few other kinds of grass, and then paint it in. I'm also planning to get a lot of leaves piled up in a few places, and maybe glue some to the tree as well. The only part of the base unpainted is the bag on top of the car.

Finally, there's some paint on this thing! Just basic values, but I'm liking it. I hope the dog gets here soon...

And the color scheme:

Caine - Mostly Finished

I finally got around to taking some better pics of Caine - he's mostly finished.

I'm really pleased with the way his face turned out... it's probably one of the best (if not the best) I've ever done.

Djanbazan WIP pt. 4

I finished the tarp and the gun, so here's the idea (with the dog photoshopped in):

Djanbazan WIP pt. 3

Another little update. The weather still isn't cooperating enough to allow me to spray prime outside, but the big work on the base is mostly finished.

I'm thinking of draping the man in a tarp, and letting the dog be the center of the piece. I've also got some cool little pouches, and I might make a harness for the dog so he will also be carrying those pouches.

I'm also thinking of making the area at the bottom left into a puddle, it might be interesting. I've also been thinking of going with a fall theme instead of winter - I've never been able to make convincing snow...

Djanbazan WIP pt. 2

Since classes have recently started, I now have considerably less time to work on models. I did manage to get a little more work done on the base, though. I'm still working on composition - I played with the tree for about an hour, messing around with size, shape, density, etc. I think I like where it's at now. I also found a second figure to add to the scene, and have decided to do some minor conversion work to the mini. I want to go for a post-apocalyptic survival look.

And here's what I'm going to use for the hunter's faithful companion:

Djanbazan WIP pt. 1

The weather has been really hot and humid here, which has prevented me from finishing Caine's base (can't prime it outside). So, I've decided to start work on a project I've been thinking about for some time now: another Infinity model, this time a sniper.

The previous two Infinity pieces were kind of seasonally themed - Sun Tze has hot summery look, while the Custodier is all about spring. To continue the theme, this guy will have a cold, wintery theme.

Colors - I'm thinking mostly greys, along with some rusty colors, muted greens, and yellowish winter grasses.

Base - I'm planning on getting a little more ambitious, again. I'd like to get a Dremel to work on the overall shape of the base. In addition to snow and wintery vegetation, I'm also planning on a junked car (with nasty upholstery - which I'll need to figure out how to do), chicken wire fence, and some other odds and ends (oil barrels, gas cans, tires, bushes, etc.). I want to work on incorporating more detail into my compositions.

I'm also going to be doing a test piece first. I only wanted a part of the base to be covered by the car, so naturally I sawed it in half. I plan to use the extra half to experiment on before I do the piece, that way I can have things figured out a little beforehand.

Here are mock-ups of both pieces.

Trying to decide between one length, or two:

The car in the test piece will be on blocks, but I'm thinking I'd like to have the tire on in the final; I'd like to make it appear as if it sunk into the ground a little bit.

Caine WIP pt. 5

A little work on the armor:

Caine WIP pt. 4

I developed the colors of the leather areas a little more, they're nearly done. I also intensified the shadows a little in a few places, mainly with blue and purple.

Caine WIP pt. 3

More work: some metallics, handkerchief, jeans and hair mostly finished. Some basecoats applied.

Caine WIP pt. 2

Some work on the face. I wanted to improve my eye technique, and found this to help. I would like to get some pupils in there, but I don't think I have a brush with a tip fine enough to do it... or else I just have to work up the courage to give it a shot!

Caine WIP pt. 1

I decided to do a different figure before I tackle either Jakes again or go for something different. I have a big project planned... but I'm going to sit on it a little while longer. So, for now, here's pCaine. He's been sitting around for the last couple years, and I figured it was time to get some paint on him.

I want to practice strong global lighting, so hopefully you can see that developing.

Jakes - Decision

I've decided I'm going to scrap her and start over. I want to try to fix her face with some green stuff, and I really want to improve my eye-painting technique. Like I said, I'm also unhappy with some of the coloring and roughness of the blends, and would like to spend some more time on those areas. I tried to rush this one, and as a result I'm unsatisfied. What's great about having a metal model, though, is that it can easily be stripped!

Jakes WIP pt. 4

All that's really left to do is finish the goggles and do some glow effect on the sword. I'm not super proud of this, I really rushed through it and it shows. It looks really rough. I do, however, really like the texture of the armor and the hair color. Other than that, I'm disappointed. I wanted to have it finished so I could submit it to the PP No Quarter thing (the due date is tomorrow), but I don't think this is my best work at all... so I doubt I will do so.

Jakes WIP pt. 3

I ended up having a rough time with the face. It seems there is an imperfection with the cast that I did not notice before: she seems to be missing half her forehead. I tried to compensate for it, but it is just something that can't be changed at this point. It made painting her left eye incredibly frustrating.

Here's what I'm talking about:

The red line shows where her forehead should be.

Well, I guess this far along there's not much I can do about it. Oh well. I really like this model though... I'm just a little frustrated.

From this angle it's not noticeable!

At least everything else is looking pretty decent so far.

I added some lip color to match her hair. It looks a little more interesting.

Jakes WIP pt. 2

Enjoying it so far. Put some time into the blues/ armor texture, as well as the base.

Jakes WIP pt. 1

Allison Jakes is up next. I really like this sculpt, it's quite nice: there is a lot of great detail, and the face is brilliant. I've decided to go with something similar to the studio scheme, though I'm not sure if I'm feeling the white outlines on the armor plates.

The only area I've developed so far is the khaki colored cloth/ padding. The rest is just basecoated.

I'm using primarily P3 colors, and I've forgotten how satiny they dry. While it's nice for the armor, the cloth could certainly use some matte varnish. It looks a little too plastic. I may just spray it with dullcote before I do the metallics.

Chaplain WIP pt. 2

I had about an hour of extra time this evening, so I decided to put some more time into this guy.

This is just the basic idea for the layout of the piece (if I ever end up finishing it, that is...). I'm thinking the ground could be muddy, with puddles.

Most of the work I did was on the stony materials (I plan to add more texture) and the flesh. The service studs on the forehead are going to take a lot more effort. I'm also thinking about doing another stage of highlights on the armor, adding fortress grey to the mix to neutralize the blue a little. We'll see. It's something to do for the hell of it.

I think the face could use a little more work too, it could be smoothed out in a couple places - cheeks especially. I like the tone of it though.

Honestly, I don't have much appreciation for painting Space Marines anymore... they just look so misshapen. They're all so stubby.
