Goreshade3

I decided to start Cryx. I've been envious of Goreshade3 for some time now. Really cool model, looks really fun to play. I speed painted him like I do for gaming stuff, but I think he turned out really well, considering. I had a good time with it!

Speedy Butcher and dogs. Pretty sweet models, I'm looking forward to axing some stuff with them!

More quick stuff.

Just a few more additions to a gaming army:

I really like this pSorscha model... I didn't think I'd enjoy painting it as much as I did.

Long Time!

So... it's been a few months. School has kept me really busy. I haven't painted anything to a high level for a while, and I'm really itching to do a nice model right now... maybe start a big project.

I have, though, added quite a few models to my "gaming" Menoth army. I realized a while ago that whenever I played a game with nicely painted models, half of my attention was on not damaging them... so I turned to speed painting models for gaming. These are all speed painted. Here are just a few examples and amount of time I spent:

1. Max unit of Idrians and their UA (12 models), ~5 hours total (for the WHOLE UNIT!!!).

2. High Reclaimer, ~1 hour total.

3. Threeoss, ~3 hours total (lots of details).

This model is incredibly cool. I want to do another, and not speed through it.

4. Tristan the focus battery, <1 hour total.

Intruder WIP pt. 4

Managed to sneak in some painting time today. I got some work done on the pouches and handgun holster, and basecoated the guns.

Even just having the black on the guns makes a big difference.

Intruder WIP pt. 3

Finished the metallics, armor, glowy parts, and base. I think I've decided against snow... the warm brown plays off the blue nicely.

Left to do: pouches, straps, holsters, and guns. Maybe I'll add a couple more vegetation details to the base, as well.

Intruder WIP pt. 2

Having fun with this guy! I'm going with a color scheme similar to the Djanbazan, but want to have more pronounced glowy ice blue things (the right eye and gauntlet gem things). I plan to do snow on the base, I'm looking for an overall cold feel.

So far I've developed the pants and armor, and basecoated the metallics. The armor still needs a couple last things before it's finished.

Intruder WIP pt. 1

I'm still waiting on the dog for the sniper display, but feel the urge to paint! So I decided to work on yet another Infinity model that caught my eye.

Not... Paints?!

I thought I'd write about an art-related experience I had today. I'm taking an art class, and we are working on these inventory projects. For the last two, I've used a similar style. Today, I sat down and tried to do the next one in the same style, and couldn't do it. I was over-thinking it, bored of it, and not enjoying it at all. So I said to myself "screw it, I'll do something different," and just kind of played around. This is a "line" inventory and it is about the illusion of space/ depth.

I kind of just went at it... and I started to think about planning while I was doing it. I realize, to a certain extent, I resent planning when it comes to making art. The pieces I do rarely come out "as planned," in fact I don't think I've ever really planned something out entirely; there are always pleasant surprises, a process of negotiation, and I've found it's easier to just go with it than to try to fight against it. Planning beyond a certain point feels counter-productive (I don't want to be totally unprepared). If it's all perfectly planned, I'm not playing around anymore, and I tend to find I like my results much more when I'm playing around. If I plan it out, I know what I am going to do - I'm only going to do what I think I should do. If it's partially unplanned, I have no idea what could happen (I don't even know what I'm going to do), and I've found I like that. I like seeing what happens. Is there any reason to value a "planned" piece of art more highly than an "unplanned" one?

Maybe I'll post some more of my class projects on here in the future, at least if it really catches me. This one I just really enjoyed.

Djanbazan WIP pt. 10

Just some small updates: I worked on the bag, and painted in the grass.

Djanbazan WIP pt. 9

More done. At this point, I just have the bag on top of the car to finish. I'm thinking about making it a dark brown, I think that top corner needs some weight. I've got some stuff left to do on the base as well. I'll be waiting for the arrival of both the dog and some leaf foliage I ordered for the tree/ ground. I'm thinking it might work nicely on the back of the cloak-tarp also.

Djanbazan WIP pt. 8

Really looking cool with the added texture on the armor:

I also put a few leaves on there just to see how they look.

Djanbazan WIP pt. 7

Some work done on the man. I'm planning on adding some damage to his armor for texture and some rust to keep him consistent with the rest of the scene.

The most interesting spot of the piece to me, so far, is the glowing eye. I'm interested in having just one spot of color on the man to distinguish him from the scene.

I'm also thinking about adding some leaves and grass to the back of his cloak, to make it look like an impromptu ghillie suit. I'm also curious to see how the addition of the dog will affect the whole thing.

Djanbazan WIP pt. 6

Lots done on the base! I was really feeling the need to put paint on something, so I started in the afternoon and just kind of kept going. I'm really liking it so far. The grass is just in to see how it looks, I'll add some moss, a few other kinds of grass, and then paint it in. I'm also planning to get a lot of leaves piled up in a few places, and maybe glue some to the tree as well. The only part of the base unpainted is the bag on top of the car.

Djanbazan WIP pt. 5

Finally, there's some paint on this thing! Just basic values, but I'm liking it. I hope the dog gets here soon...

And the color scheme:

Caine - Mostly Finished

I finally got around to taking some better pics of Caine - he's mostly finished.

I'm really pleased with the way his face turned out... it's probably one of the best (if not the best) I've ever done.

Djanbazan WIP pt. 4

I finished the tarp and the gun, so here's the idea (with the dog photoshopped in):

Djanbazan WIP pt. 3

Another little update. The weather still isn't cooperating enough to allow me to spray prime outside, but the big work on the base is mostly finished.

I'm thinking of draping the man in a tarp, and letting the dog be the center of the piece. I've also got some cool little pouches, and I might make a harness for the dog so he will also be carrying those pouches.

I'm also thinking of making the area at the bottom left into a puddle, it might be interesting. I've also been thinking of going with a fall theme instead of winter - I've never been able to make convincing snow...

Djanbazan WIP pt. 2

Since classes have recently started, I now have considerably less time to work on models. I did manage to get a little more work done on the base, though. I'm still working on composition - I played with the tree for about an hour, messing around with size, shape, density, etc. I think I like where it's at now. I also found a second figure to add to the scene, and have decided to do some minor conversion work to the mini. I want to go for a post-apocalyptic survival look.

And here's what I'm going to use for the hunter's faithful companion:

Djanbazan WIP pt. 1

The weather has been really hot and humid here, which has prevented me from finishing Caine's base (can't prime it outside). So, I've decided to start work on a project I've been thinking about for some time now: another Infinity model, this time a sniper.

The previous two Infinity pieces were kind of seasonally themed - Sun Tze has hot summery look, while the Custodier is all about spring. To continue the theme, this guy will have a cold, wintery theme.

Colors - I'm thinking mostly greys, along with some rusty colors, muted greens, and yellowish winter grasses.

Base - I'm planning on getting a little more ambitious, again. I'd like to get a Dremel to work on the overall shape of the base. In addition to snow and wintery vegetation, I'm also planning on a junked car (with nasty upholstery - which I'll need to figure out how to do), chicken wire fence, and some other odds and ends (oil barrels, gas cans, tires, bushes, etc.). I want to work on incorporating more detail into my compositions.

I'm also going to be doing a test piece first. I only wanted a part of the base to be covered by the car, so naturally I sawed it in half. I plan to use the extra half to experiment on before I do the piece, that way I can have things figured out a little beforehand.

Here are mock-ups of both pieces.

Trying to decide between one length, or two:

The car in the test piece will be on blocks, but I'm thinking I'd like to have the tire on in the final; I'd like to make it appear as if it sunk into the ground a little bit.
